Creating a unique blog

These days, a blog is an integral part of a communications strategy with your market and customers.  I’ve got a few blogs, both personal (scrambledminds.com), experimental (centerpiecesforweddings.info), this blog (Ditch the Office) and soon to be business focused (furcle.com).  Now, I’m into technology, but I’m not interested in coding themes for WordPress (my preferred blogging platform) so I generally have used the default themes or freely available themes on the web, but these typically have limitations and you can’t modify them without knowing what you’re doing.

In that light, I’m trying to identify some themes for WordPress that will allow you to create a theme without ANY coding knowledge at all.  I want the ability to modify the look, feel, structure, design and anything else from a gui interface – No CSS, no HTML, no editing in text editors and uploading files.  What I want is something like Squarespace, but for wordpress.  Check out what you can do at Squarespace here.

I’ve found two potential options for creating a theme without needing to know how to do the complex behind the scenes stuff:

  • Thesis
  • WPUnlimited

Do you know of any more?  Do you have a preference for these?  I’m concerned that I can’t do all the style changes through a gui with Thesis.  If I try one I’ll let you know.

Layout is important. At the time of posting, you tend to ask for people to leave a comment. But...

You don't give them a mechanism to do so. To add a comment, users need to scroll back up to the top of the post to comment.

It outraged me so much that I actually took the time to go there and give you a design bollocking (a polite one, but a bollocking nonetheless).

Put a "Post a comment" link at the end of your blog entries (or at the very least, get one of the shaved monkeys who do the work for you).

"If you have an opinion on what I've just posted, please"

    a) "provide feedback by pressing the comment button located at the end of the post, which makes sense..."; or
    b) "provide feedback by pressing the comment button located at the start of the post, which is probably well off-screen at the moment, and decreases the likelihood that you'll actually give good feedback as to do so is, quite frankly, a pain in the "Jacksie"."

I read a post, feel the need to comment, so press the button. On your site, I read a post, feel the need to comment, and... how do I post a comment? Not intuitive, therefore not getting the feedback you want.

    Option A for me please.

    Hi Mr Feedback,

Thanks for the... Feedback. You're right of course. I'm currently using a free theme for Ditch the Office (Clean Home) and hadn't really noticed that it was difficult to comment on posts from the main blog page. If you go to the specific article page, you're able to leave comments easily. I'll get a more obvious "submit a comment" button/link on the main page.

    Thanks again for the feedback.

    Jason
